Jenoptik expands its activities in the photovoltaics industry

17/08/2010

The new JENOPTIK-VOTAN™ Solas 1810/3610 laser system were developed specially for drilling via holes in wafer-based silicon-solar cells. The Machine is capable to be used for various Laser production processes. New contacting technologies and cell concept became possible which will lead to increased efficiency.

With the development of the JENOPTIK-VOTAN™ Solas 1810/3610 Jenoptik is expanding its activities in the photovoltaics market, combining laser technology know-how in all aspects of the JenLas® IR50 and IR70 disk laser with complex system technology. Based on its expertise along the entire added value chain – from laser process through optics to finished production facility for a wide range of laser material processing tasks - the Jenoptik Lasers & Material Processing division developed a laser processing machine for drilling through holes in wafers for silicon solar cells.

One of the most important requirements for the industry is increasing efficiency of silicon solar cells and cost reduction of production. This requirement is the driver for new technologies. The JENOPTIK-VOTAN™ Solas 1810/3610 laser system can have a positive influence on both factors.
The electrical efficiency of the silicon solar cells can be increased through the use of Metal Wrap Through (MWT) or Emitter Wrap Through (EWT) technology.

In order to increase the active surface area of the cells, in the case of both technologies the contacts are laid through via holes from the front to the rear side of the cell. The contact fingers that are currently used as standard and covers parts of the active surface area can therefore be dispensed mostly. Beside the wrap through technology the JENOPTIK-VOTAN™ Solas 1810/3610 can be configured for various new laser production processes like

• Selective Laser Doping
• Laser Fired Contacts
• Laser Ablation of Delectric layers
• Laser edge isolation

The JENOPTIK-VOTAN™ Solas 1810/3610 laser system enable high throughput up to 3600 Wafer per hour, optional features such as: chuck for single processing, wafer handling (belt conveyor), carrier, Automatic Wafer position detection (alignment), camera control process result, exhaust, air conditioning, automatic hatch for a maximum in flexibility for customers at lowest cost of ownership.

The JENOPTIK-VOTAN™ Solas1810/3610 will be offered in two versions, a stand-alone system for the development of new products and processes and a technology module for integration into the existing in-line production system.
